Cartagena, Colombia

Perched on the northern coast of Colombia alongside the azure blue waters of the Caribbean, the steamy and sultry city of Cartagena has become a top travel destination. The formerly war-torn land of Pablo Escobar has revitalized itself and now it shines. Its magnetism lies in the city’s beautiful architecture, tropical climate, amazing food, festive nightlife, and the vibrant culture of the local Colombian people. Each time I visit there is something new to see- but the Colombian charm and allure remain constant. Whether popping in for a weekend, or staying for a longer trip, the city of Cartagena will always be a destination I want to return to.
A LITTLE CARTAGENA HISTORY
Arriving in Cartagena, night or day, the first thing you notice – beyond the sweltering heat and humidity – is the gorgeous scenic architecture of a past Colonial era. The present city, founded in 1533, was named after Cartagena, Spain and by extension, the historic city of Carthage - now in Tunisia, making it one of South America's oldest colonial cities. It's success as a port city known for extracting gold and silver - also made it a prime target for pirates. This triggered the city to construct the fortifications of the Castillo San Felipe and city walls, literally encapsulating it by one of the largest and strongest fortresses, still standing as a testament to its time of strength against foreign invasion.

Inside the wall of this easily walkable city, each turn on the windy streets entices you to snap a photo of the picturesque brightly colored buildings with awnings of multicolor bougainvillea cascading to the street below. Locals will teach you that each doorway is different because the height and width of the door was dictated by the owner’s wealth and status. Even the doorknocker had meaning; those with lions or tigers were of the upper echelon in status, while the less fortunate might be left with something like a little salamander.

PLANNING YOUR VISIT
GETTING THERE: Fly into Rafael Núñez International Airport of Cartagena and take a Taxi/Uber/Private Transfer to your accommodation.
GETTING AROUND: The touristic areas of Cartagena are easily walkable. Uber /Didi / InDriver car Rideshare services are quick and inexpensive for going between various locations in the city.
HOW MUCH TIME TO SPEND: Cartagena can be a quick, fun weekend trip, or a great place for a long-stay. For a first time visit, I recommend 3-4 days.
WHEN TO VISIT: Due to its location, the city can be visited year-round. The Dry Season runs from December to April; in the Wet Season expect sunny days but afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
WHAT TO SEE & DO
There are so many things to do in this city, for sure you won't get bored. To learn about the history and culture of this incredible city, take a Walking Tour, or visit the Museum of Cartagena de Indias at the beautiful former Palace of the Inquisition, that currently serves as a museum showcasing historical artifacts. And make sure to include Castile San Felipe de Barajas, a fortress built in 1639 and located on the Hill of San Lázaro. Avoid the mid-day heat because there is no shade, but early mornings or late afternoons offer cooler temperatures and wonderful light for photography of the fort with stunning vistas out to the sea.
Truly, the best activities might be the lack of activity. Wander around Centro Historico - the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, admiring the beautiful colored architecture adorned with cascading bougainvillea. Sip on a fresh sugar cane or coconut juice while you enjoy a leisurely brunch at one of the many outdoor cafes. Relax at one of the gorgeous rooftop infinity pools with ocean views in Bocagrande. Spend some time admiring the many vibrant murals of the Getsemani neighborhood.
Although there are some beaches on Bocagrande in Cartagena, you don't want to miss heading out to the nearby Rosario Islands for a glorious day in the sun. Group charter boats can be booked for day trips (lunch included), or you can rent a private yacht for a more exclusive experience. An hour out and the bustle of the city is completely forgotten as you float in crystal clear warm Caribbean water, snacking on freshly caught crab and lobster on the nearest private beach. If you're short on time, you can you head out for a short sunset cruise lounging on a Catamaran, sipping sparkling wine as watching the skyline of the city fades away and lights up.

Sunsets are also enjoyed from the plethora of rooftop bars and cafes. Cafe del Mar is one of the most popular due to its location on top of the fortress walls with a direct view of the ocean.
And finally, nightlife! The vibrant Colombian culture ensures there are numerous choices when it comes to nighttime activities. For a party atmosphere, you can dance salsa at the famous Cafe Havana, or party to the latest music until the morning at La Movida, La Jugado, or one of the cities numerous clubs. Want something more chill? Enjoy top tier mixology at the beautifully decorated three-story Alquimico, ranking on the World's 50 Best Bars. Or, for an upscale experience with a stunning city view, go to the rooftop of the five-star Hotel Movich Cartagena de Indias.
WHERE TO SHOP & WHAT TO BUY
Shopping is endless as the streets of the Old Town are packed with bargain to designer collections, from local Colombian’s handmade art, clothing, and jewelry in places like Casa Abba, to more prominent names such as Agua Bendita, or the uber luxurious St. Dom. For a proper shopping mall, head to La Serrezuela Mall, which has Colombian as well as international brands in a modern, air conditioned former theatre. And don’t forget to check out the city’s numerous jewelers to buy emeralds- the gemstone of Colombia, which accounts for 70-90% of the world supply of dazzling green rocks.

WHAT TO EAT & WHERE TO DINE
Food in Cartagena is abundant and delicious! The small city is packed with foodie places to visit from luxury five-star restaurants down to sidewalk vendors hawking the traditional arrepas (kind of like a thick pancake with cheese or other fillings), empanadas, or fresh fruit for the more health-conscious. The cuisine is a delicious mix of Caribbean, African, and Spanish influences, featuring lots of fresh seafood, coconut, tropical fruit and plantains.
DON'T MISS THE CEVICHE
Due to its location, seafood is plentiful on any menu, and ceviche is the signature dish of the city. There are many different ways to prepare it- from the types of fish to the ingredients. La Cevicheria is the most famous ceviche venue, a place whose popularity was enhanced by a visit from the late culinary aficionado Anthony Bourdain, whose picture in the restaurant appears on the wall. But, you can also get outstanding ceviche at many other places in town, including my favorite, Jardin Santa Clara at Sofitel Legend. Not only is the food incredible but the garden setting at this beautiful property is purely magical.
SEAFOOD AND OTHER DELICIOUS ENTREES

For fresh seafood and Caribbean cuisine, there are some not-to-be-missed restaurants. For a big splurge, Celele has a bright, beautiful space to dine and has been named on the World's 50 Best Restaurants List. The locally renowned restaurant Carmen, offers a fine dining experience with a modern take on traditional Colombian cuisine, is set in a beautiful courtyard restaurant in the heart of the Old Town. And one of my personal favorites is Cuzco, for an upscale yet more casual vibe, in a picturesque indoor-outdoor space featuring a picturesque small pool.
WHERE TO STAY
There are three main areas to stay in Cartagena, each with its own highlights and drawbacks.
EL CENTRO / WALLED CITY / OLD TOWN: Surrounded by the fortified walls, this is the heart of Cartagena, featuring colorful, colonial architecture, numerous restaurants and shopping, and historical sites such as the Castillo San Felipe. If you want to be in the heart of the action, this is the best place to stay. The downside is this area is rather noisy and prone to random and unexpected power outages. Everything in this area is original architecture so properties might be renovated. but will still have their historic charm.
SOFITEL LEGEND SANTA CLARA: This exquisite property was originally built as a 17th-century convent (1621) that served as a charity hospital and medical school before becoming a hotel in 1995. It exudes colonial charm, while offering modern conveniences.
ANANDA HOTEL BOUTIQUE: Also a restored 16th century house with modern comforts, featuring a spa and pool.
GETSEMANI: Adjacent to El Centro, a 5-10 minute walk to the Main Square Clock Tower, is this former red-light district, which is being revitalized and quite popular with digital nomads, bohemian types, and younger travelers. The older buildings here are covered with beautiful, colorful murals and street art. You can find lots of great restaurants and live music any night of the week. Although this area leans towards more affordable accommodations, it is rapidly developing, soon to be featuring a new Four Seasons (scheduled to open 2026)
ARSENAL HOTEL (FORMERLY ALLURE CHOCOLAT): One of my favorite hotels, this five-star property features a stunning rooftop infinity pool with a direct view of Bocagrande.
SOY LOCAL: For a more reasonable option, I suggest this modern, well-designed property with modern-touches and large rooftop terrace and pool.
BOCAGRANDE: This oceanfront area of high-rises is located on the peninsula, about a 10 minute car-ride from the Old Town or Getsemani. Here, you will find all the modern amenities from luxury brand hotels, plus the most incredible oceanfront infinity pools.
HYATT REGENCY CARTAGENA: Luxury property featuring what might be the most gorgeous infinity pool in Cartagena.
INTERCONTINENTAL CARTAGENA DE INDIAS: This iconic brand features a 5 -star resort with direct beach access.
